2010 PACIFIC REGIONAL EYE HEALTH CONFERENCE

The Pacific Eye Institute, in conjunction with the Fred Hollows Foundation New Zealand (FHFNZ), is pleased to invite you to attend the Pacific Regional Eye Health Conference and/or Workshops 2010 in Suva, Fiji Islands.

Programs for the two days of diabetes eye care and professional development workshops, 21-22 June, and the conference, 23-25 June, are available from the links below. The Pacific Regional Eye Health Conference and workshops have been organised for Pacific based eye care workers and will examine best practice approaches to eye care delivery, developing standards for the Pacific and clinical topics of interest.

CONFERENCE PRESENTERS

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Dr John Szetu is director of the Pacific Eye Institute in Suva, Fiji and current President of PacEyes, the Pacific Eye Care Society. Dr Szetu has an impressive track record in designing and implementing training courses for eye care nurses and supervising registrars in the Pacific. After five years in Vanuatu developing a national eye care program with the support of The Fred Hollows Foundation New Zealand, Dr Szetu teamed up again with FHFNZ to develop regional training in eye care for Pacific nurses and doctors.

Dr Gyaneshwar Rao FRACP is consultant physician at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, Fiji, where he has worked since 1990. For 17 years Head of the Department of Medicine, Dr Rao has extensive experience in the care of patients with diabetes in the Fijian setting.  

Dr Neil Murray is a New Zealand ophthalmologist, a generalist with interests in uveitis, cornea and governance. Dr Murray has a passion for developing world ophthalmology and has pursued this in many different parts of the world with many different organisations over the past 17 years. He has worked in the Pacific with VOSO and Marine Reach in Fiji on several occasions. By the end of this year Dr Murray will have trained his successors and worked himself out of his role with CBM as Medical Advisor in West Africa. Through the advisory work he participates in the Technology Committee of the IAPB. Dr Murray sits on the RANZCO International Ophthalmology Committee and has recently replaced Dr Gary Brian as chairperson.  

Sheona McGraw is Western Pacific Regional Program Manager for IAPB, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. Sheona has been working in an international capacity for over ten years. Prior to her position with IAPB, she worked with the Canadian Government, most notably with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. She has also had extensive experience working with NGOs managing programs in community and indigenous health, disability, education, gender, and income generation. Sheona has a Bachelor of International Business from Carleton University in Canada, and an MSc in Marketing from the University Adolfo Ibanez in Chile.

Dr Frances Hughes RN, DNurs, ONZM is Adjunct Professor at AUT Auckland and UTS Sydney. She is also WHO PIMHnet (Pacific Islands Mental Health Network) facilitator.
