master of medicine (ophthalmology)
Three-year course, awarded by the University of PNG
The Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) course is about comprehensive ophthalmology: the diagnosis of blindness and impaired vision from all causes, and treatment as appropriate. The syllabus covers ophthalmology and ophthalmic practice as outlined by the International Council of Ophthalmology, but there is an emphasis on application to developing country circumstances.
The advanced level three-year Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) course is suitable for an ‘eye doctor’ who wishes to be a leading authority on ophthalmic knowledge and practice, and to work as an comprehensive ‘ophthalmologist’ with an appropriate range and depth of practice. This ‘ophthalmologist’ is competent to diagnose and treat blindness and impaired vision (or overseeing ancillary staff doing this), lead an eye care team, and take a pivotal role in the planning and execution of eye services at a national level.
